Student Attendance

The bell schedule for Alternative Classes mirrors high school bell schedules with some modifications. 1st period class begins at 7:15 am and 7th period class ends at 2:30 pm. Bus transportation to Alternative Classes insures prompt student attendance in 1st period class. Parents and guardians who choose to drive their student to school should arrive at the Annex building between 6:45 and 7:05 am. “Curbside sign in” service is offered from 6:45 to 7:05 am – school staff members will meet you at the parking lot curbside for sign in of your student. A student is tardy to 1st period between 7:16 and 7:31 am. After 7:31 am, the student is recorded as absent (the student has missed 15 minutes or more of class). The ADA time (average daily attendance) at Alternative Classes is taken at 9:42 am. State funding is provided to the school district for students present at school at 9:42 am.

Attendance Counts at School and On the Job

Mrs. Caroline Marks is the attendance secretary. In the event of a student's absence from school, call Caroline Marks at (832) 249-4804. Your call to explain your student's absence from school is important. A note explaining the student's absence should be sent to Mrs. Marks within 5 school days of the student's absence.

Prior to the start of the school year, parents and guardians should create or refresh their Skyward Family Access account. When your student is absent, contact the Alternative Classes Attendance Secretary, Caroline Marks, (832) 249-4804 or [email protected] . She can also guide you on how to submit your excused absence notes online via your Skyward Family access account.

The Harris County District Attorney has this explanation of Texas law relating to student absences. The law applies to this campus as well as other campuses in the district. If your child has received three (3) unexcused absences from school, the parent or guardian will receive a notice of those absences from the school district. School officials will request that you attend a conference to discuss your student’s attendance and find ways to solve your student’s attendance problems before referral to Truancy Court or filing of criminal charges.
